How to choose an LED strip?+

Before buying LED strips, it is very important to take several aspects into account so as not to make the wrong decision. Here are some key points:

  • Type of LED strip: The first thing is to know how we want the light of our LED strip to be, of a single color (monochromatic) or of various colors (RGB, RGB+W).
  • Installation area: If you are going to install the LED strip in a humid area such as a bathroom or outdoors, make sure it has the appropriate IP protection. If you are going to install it indoors with an IP20 protection it is enough.
  • Voltage: LED strips can be powered at 12V, 24V or direct to the network (220-240V). Make sure that the voltage of the strip matches that of the power supply to which it will be connected.
  • Length: Measure the area where you are going to install the LED strip to calculate the necessary length.
  • Luminosity: Basically it is the amount of light from the LED strip. It is measured in lumens per meter. The more lumens, the more light.

What is better a 24V or 12V LED strip?+

LED strips that operate at 24V are more efficient and need less current to produce the same power as a 12V strip. Its energy loss and voltage drop over longer distances is also lower, which is an advantage in installations that require a longer LED strip length.

They are also safer than 12V at the level of electrical risk. By passing a lower current through the 24V there is less risk.

Regarding the quantity of light, it is much easier to find LED strips with a high light output at 24V than at 12V.

If cost is not a differential factor, at Igan we always recommend 24V LED strips.

Tips for installing LED strips+

The installation of LED strips is a more complex process than installing a traditional lamp, so it is important to follow some basic tips to do it correctly:

  • Planning: Before beginning the installation, measure the space where you are going to install the LED strip, the power points and if there are corners or curves.
  • Preparation: Cut the section of LED strip (in the cutting areas) according to the length of the space where it is going to be installed. If the LED strip has a power of more than 8w per meter, we recommend installing it on an aluminum profile. This guarantees greater heat dissipation of the LED Chip and greater durability.
  • Mounting: Most of the LED strips have an adhesive tape to facilitate their installation. If necessary you can use accessories from the manufacturer to ensure an even more secure installation.
  • Connection: Connect the end of the LED strip to the power supply. Make sure the polarity of the wires, positive (+) and negative (-) match.
  • Verification: Once the installation is finished, we upload the automatic lighting and verify that everything works correctly.

If you do not have experience in electrical work or in your installation of LED strips, it is necessary to carry out welding, it is recommended that you have a professional electrician.
